“Non-HP chip detected” — a nag, not a block. Press OK and keep printing.
“Unauthorized Cartridge” — the real block. Fixed by setting Cartridge Policy to Off, which is already done.

This is the second M227. An old Mac print queue pointed at this unit — which explains why printing silently failed for months. The Mac was talking to a printer that wasn't plugged in. That dead queue has been deleted.
It takes the same CF230A / CF230X toner and CF232A drum as the live M227, so cartridges interchange freely between them.

Cartridge family is HP 201X high yield. The 201A is the low-yield version — buy 201X. Nothing to order; all four are near full.
This queue sat disabled since April 2026 with four stuck jobs behind it. Re-enabled and cleared.

The printer itself reports healthy (no error state, 70% toner), but the Mac queue disables itself the moment a real job is sent. It accepts the job, then halts with printer-stopped.
This is a driver/backend problem on the Mac, not a hardware fault. Until it's fixed, send long text jobs to the M227fdw instead.
This printer is not like the others. HP's own documentation states the 4301 series uses Dynamic Security to block cartridges using a non-HP chip.
The M227 and M277 predate that — they give you Cartridge Policy switches you can turn off. Dynamic Security has no off switch. That is the entire problem.

Do not buy 220A / 220X. Those fit the 4302 and 4202, not this printer.
Third-party toner here is a genuine gamble in a way it isn't on the older printers. Either budget for genuine HP 210X, or buy one compatible 4-pack from a seller with free returns and test before buying more.

Firmware updates are the single most common way a working third-party cartridge suddenly stops working.
The X cartridge holds roughly twice what the A holds for a small price difference. Same physical cartridge body. There is no reason to buy the A.
Keep the packaging until a new cartridge is confirmed printing — it makes returns painless if it's rejected.
The queue is paused, not broken. Check System Settings → Printers & Scanners for a paused queue and resume it.
Clear old stuck jobs before resuming, or every one of them prints at once.
